Art and History

Abruzzo has an amazing array of art and monuments to delight visitors. Romanesque churches, ancient necropolises and old fortifications can be found throughout the region and attract growing numbers of tourists each year.

These include the ancient streets of Scanno and the Basilica of Santa Maria Di Collemaggio and we have listed a few others below:

Alba Fucens - The remains of the most important Roman city in Abruzzo. The church of S.Pietro built on the ruins of Apollos temple, tower above the ancient ruins.

Amiternum - Near L'Aquila are the ruins of a Sabine city that was conquered by Rome in 293BC, which include and amphitheatre and theatre.

Chieti - The ancient ruins of the Roman town of Teate can be seen in various parts of the city including the Roman theatre and temple complex and the cistern of the old baths.

Fossa - The excavations of an Iron Age necropolis can be found at Fossa, one of the oldest Iron Age discoveries in Abruzzo.

Peltunium - The Vestini city in the plain south of L'Aquila was rebuilt by the Romans. The ruins include an amphitheatre and city wall.

Sulmano - At the foot of Mount Morrone are the sizeable terraces of the sanctuary of Ercole Curino, the most impressive Italic places of worship in the entire region. There are remains from the 1st century BC, but the sanctuary is probably much older. Some Roman ruins are visible below the Annunziata complex.
