Nature Holidays

The region of Abruzzo is known as the 'Green Region' of Europe. It is an area of un spoilt natural beauty and hosts three of Italy's National Parks, a Regional Park and 30 nature reserves which when combined constitute almost 30% of the regions surface. Its habitat contains over 75% of the continents flora and fauna species.

Its 130km of coastline is offset by two of the highest peaks in the Apennine mountain range, Gran Sasso and Majella (known locally as the 'Mother' mountain) and its landscape has changed little since the Middle Ages.

Flora

The hills and mountains of Abruzzo are home to endemic species of flora found only in specific locations including:

  • Marsican Iris
  • Milk-vetch
  • Majella Bindweed
  • Gentian
  • Buttercup
  • Calvoni Bluebell
  • Apennine Arrowhead alpine (Gran Sasso and Majella)
  • Lady's Slipper Orchid

Fauna

The most striking of Abruzzo's animal population is the Marsican Bear, which is also the symbol of the Abruzzo National Park. At one time almost extinct, thanks to the dedication and protection of the Park Authority there are thought to be approximately 80 bears living in the area and on the neighbouring massifs.

The area also has a population of an endangered subspecies of Chamois, the symbol of the Gran Sasso-Laga Mountains National Park. The Chamois was recently reintegrated on the territory and lives in Val Di Rose and on the slopes of Mount Amaro and Mount Camicia.

The Majella National Park is also home to Wolves. Thanks to the protection afforded to the species since 1971, it is now re colonising the area of Abruzzo.

Agriturismo Montupoli's close proximity to Abbruzzo’s National Parks makes it and ideal venue for those wanting to discover more about Abruzzo's abundance of nature.

Closest of all is the Majella National Park, which encircles Mount Amaro (2793m), the second highest peak in the Apennine range. From its alpine meadows and tree-covered slopes to the baron landscape at higher altitude, its diversity is spectacular.
